Mobile Access Credentials for Apartment Buildings: Using Your Phone Instead of a Fob

Mobile credentials can turn a compatible smartphone into another way to access an apartment building. They do not have to replace cards and fobs — they can simply give residents another choice.

What is a mobile access credential?

A mobile access credential is a digital credential provisioned to a supported mobile device and used with compatible access-control readers. Instead of presenting only a physical card or fob, an authorised resident can use their phone where the building’s hardware and access-control configuration support mobile credentials.

Does a mobile credential replace the building’s fobs?

Not necessarily. For many apartment buildings, the practical approach is to offer both. Physical credentials remain familiar and useful, while residents who prefer phone-based access can choose a mobile credential.

This is particularly important in residential buildings, where one technology rarely suits every resident. The goal is choice rather than forcing an entire building to change behaviour.

What does the building need?

Mobile credentials depend on the complete access environment, not just the resident’s phone. The building needs compatible readers, suitable access-control infrastructure and the correct credential configuration. Device and operating-system compatibility also matters.

HID currently publishes compatibility information for its Mobile Access app and supports mobile access across compatible iOS and Android devices. Buildings should confirm the specific reader, phone and deployment requirements for their project.

How HID Mobile Access and HID Origo fit together

HID Origo is HID’s cloud platform for physical access-control solutions. HID’s Mobile Identities APIs allow approved applications to integrate functions such as user, device and credential administration into their own software.

That API model means a building platform does not necessarily have to send residents or administrators through a separate management website for every provisioning step.

JAXIAN implementation: In a compatible JAXIAN Access deployment, a resident can start the mobile-credential process from their JAXIAN resident portal. JAXIAN connects to HID Origo through the API and handles the provisioning workflow. The resident uses the HID Mobile Access app to receive and use the credential.

Why integrate provisioning into the resident portal?

Access-control technology is normally invisible to a resident until they need a credential, replace a phone or change access. Bringing the request into the building platform reduces the number of systems the resident needs to understand.

For JAXIAN, that is the important part of the integration: HID provides the mobile-access credential technology, while JAXIAN provides the resident-facing workflow around it.

Are mobile credentials free?

Mobile credential services can involve ongoing licensing or subscription costs. JAXIAN therefore treats its HID mobile credential option as a paid resident add-on, with an annual mobile credential fee applying. The resident-facing price can be set and communicated as part of the building’s JAXIAN deployment.

What should a strata committee or building manager ask?

  • Are the existing readers compatible with the proposed mobile credential technology?
  • Will mobile credentials supplement or replace physical cards and fobs?
  • Which phones and operating-system versions are supported?
  • Who can request and approve a mobile credential?
  • What happens when a resident replaces or loses a phone?
  • What ongoing credential or subscription charges apply?
  • How are residents added, changed and removed from the system?

How JAXIAN approaches mobile access

JAXIAN treats mobile access as an optional extension of JAXIAN Access. Residents who want a mobile credential can organise it through their JAXIAN portal, while buildings can continue supporting physical credentials according to their access policy.

The same principle applies elsewhere in JAXIAN: provide modern options without unnecessarily removing familiar ones. For intercoms, that can mean mobile answering through WhatsApp alongside a dedicated in-apartment touchscreen. For access, it can mean a physical credential alongside an optional mobile credential.
